Our HomeNow updates regularly feature a key role in the housing and homelessness sector, showcasing the variety of available career pathways.
This month, we look at roles in Finance.
Finance careers aren’t limited to corporate boardrooms, there’s a growing demand for finance professionals in not-for-profit (NFP) organisations. These roles offer a meaningful alternative for those looking to align their financial expertise with a mission-driven career.
In NFPs, finance professionals play a crucial role in budgeting, grant management, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with donor and regulatory requirements. Unlike in the private sector, the focus isn’t on maximising profit but on maximising impact. This shift in focus challenges professionals to think creatively about resource allocation and long-term sustainability.
Positions can range from entry-level roles like finance assistants and grant accountants to leadership roles such as CFO or director of finance. These jobs require strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to transparency and accountability.
What's it like to work in Finance in housing and homelessness support?
Here's what two current employees in the sector had to say:
"My work contributes to reducing homelessness in that I'm supporting the team who are delivering services. Internally, we work with the team to both receive and provide information that helps them make important decisions about what they can do. Our fantastic financial controls, systems and reporting means that funding organisations have confidence in our ability to deliver what we promise and that we will spend our money in accordance with the terms agreed. This confidence contributes to continued funding. And of course, we make sure the staff get paid!"
"What I like most about my job is because it's for a not-for-profit, it gives my job meaning. Finance can be all about money sometimes, but working for this organisation makes my job that little bit more rewarding. I feel even though it is a small contribution, it is good for the soul to know I play a role in helping more people to have a home."
Advice for those interested in Finance roles "Accounting is such a varied field; there is something for everyone who likes numbers and processes. Consider all your options and try as many as you can. I tried several specialties before deciding that not-for-profit was the best industry for me because it combines my two loves: balancing numbers and helping people."
"My advice if you're not qualified but would like to move into the field, is ask your employer about supporting your development journey, such as enrolling in a Certificate IV Bookkeeping and Financial Services course."
