Role Spotlight: Urban and Regional Planners
Each HomeNow update features a key role in the housing and homelessness sector. This time, we're focusing on Urban and Regional Planning roles.
To make great communities happen, planners consult widely and work closely with the community. Planners use their expertise to prepare plans for the future of the neighbourhood, town, city or region; making sure development is fair and balanced, improves people’s lives, and creates a better and more sustainable future for all. This includes ensuring there is sufficient and affordable housing to meet the community's needs. Planners are creative problem-solvers who work on:
housing affordability
social inclusion
better transport
economic development
population growth.
When you become a planner, there’s lots of different career paths to choose from, particularly in relation to housing. You could work in:
Urban development
Regional and rural planning
Development assessment and land use
Social and community-based planning
Urban design and place-making
Neighbourhood and urban renewal
Infrastructure and services planning
Planners are needed across a range of sectors, including local, state and federal government, not-for-profit organisations, property development and private consultancy. It's a great career path for people who are creative, think strategically and analytically, enjoy collaborating with people from a range of other professions, and want to make a positive impact on the world.
The HomeNow team paying a visit to the Vinnies Homeless Hostel in Townsville
Last month, the HomeNow team from project partner Q Shelter had the privilege of visiting several regional areas across Queensland, including Roma, Miles, Townsville, Ipswich, and Toowoomba. It was inspiring to meet with local communities and learn first hand about the unique challenges they face in addressing homelessness and housing insecurity.
These visits have given us valuable insights into the impact of housing shortages and the growing need for tailored support in regional areas. Each community has its own story to tell, and it’s clear that regional Queensland is in urgent need of skilled professionals to help drive meaningful change.
Have you ever considered taking your skills to a regional or remote area? Positions like social workers, outreach workers, and community development professionals are not only in high demand but are also deeply rewarding. Working in these areas offers an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families, helping to strengthen communities from the ground up.
If you’re passionate about making an impact and are ready for a new challenge, perhaps it’s time to explore the opportunities waiting in regional Queensland. Your skills could be the catalyst for change in places that need it most.
