Role spotlight: Data Analysis and Management
Our HomeNow updates regularly feature a key role in the housing and homelessness sector, showcasing the variety of available career pathways.
This month, we look at roles in Data Analysis and Management - an area of increasing interest and importance as we work to solve homelessness.
As governments, organisations, and communities invest more time and resources into solving the housing crisis and reducing homelessness rates, having access to up-to-date and correct data is crucial to identifying trends, shaping policies, and delivering services and resources where they are needed most.
Often possessing skills and backgrounds in areas such as computer science, information technology, mathematics, statistics or business analytics, Data Officers and Analysts gather, manage and analyse data for organisations and governments. If you are passionate about social justice and making a difference for vulnerable people, but you prefer to be behind the scenes gathering key information and insights to help improve our communities, this could be the role for you!
To find out more, we sat down with Ashish, a Data Analyst who was working for a private company before finding his current role with an organisation representing Queensland's homelessness and housing sector.
"A typical day at work for me involves analysing data, building and updating dashboards to uncover insights, and solving any data or reporting requests for our organisation or others we work with.
"What I enjoy most about my job is transforming complex data into clear, actionable insights that help our organisation better understand the bigger picture and drive informed decision-making.
"Through providing accurate data and insights, I help shape decisions for our leadership team that directly improve outcomes for individuals who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
"Something that surprised me about this sector was the level of collaboration required across different services to support a single household to find an appropriate and stable home. That was eye-opening."
Ashish's advice for working as a Data Analyst in housing and homelessness:
Develop a clear understanding of the human impact behind the data.
Always ensure accuracy, your numbers matter, and often matter a great deal as they are showcased across the sector.
Most importantly, approach the work with purpose, knowing that your insights contribute to real-world change.
Keen to get involved? While roles in data management and analysis may not be advertised frequently in our sector, this skill area is growing in demand. One way to get a foot in the door is to volunteer with a small not-for-profit organisation, or move into the field laterally by working in other roles first such as administration or service delivery.
